Room for Improvement: Guestroom

Archived Reports:

All Room for Improvement

Two for one is usually too good to be true. But in tonight's Room for Improvement, Martin Amado is showing us how to turn a single space into an office and a spare bedroom.

WSVN--Martin Amado: "Whether you live in a house or condo, most homeowners have a need for a dual-purpose room. Today's room for Improvement, it's an office that also doubles as a guest bedroom. At the moment though the space is a mismatch of styles, but I am here to change all that in one day!"

Martin Amado: "Room for Improvement

Sonia Nieves: "Hi Martin, how are you nice to meet you come on in."

Martin Amado: "Thank you."

Martin Amado: "So this works as a guest bedroom and an office, and you are not completely happy with the way it looks right now."

Sonia Nieves: "No I am not, I'd like to see color and more inviting you know more inviting for my son, my family come here."

Martin's Magic:

I am using these sea-glass rocks as the inspiration for the color scheme of the room. We already have the blue in the bedding so I am playing up the seafoam green on the walls.

Martin Amado: "This is a nice soothing color."

Martin Amado: "This is too much blue on its own but by adding the sheers it really just softens up the entire look."

Design Direction:

The desk is really too big for the size of this small wall, but by placing it over here instead with the bed opposite, it's gonna visually balance out the room.

Martin Amado: "I found these cubes that I am not only using as nightstands, but also storage to hide out all of Sonia's grandkids toys."

Martin Amado: "Nice accesories can make or break a desk."

Cheap Fix:

At the beginning of the day Sonia had this wall full of shelves and it looked really cluttered. But by spacing them out, and hanging three vertically on this wall, we create the illusion of a bookcase.

Martin Amado: "One of the easiest things you can do so that your desk doesn't look so office-like is to switch out the chairs. It turns it into a beautiful writing desk you'd find at a hotel and we are done."

Martin Amado: "Before the white walls and different furniture stlyles took the room in many directions. But now by sticking to a color scheme reminiscent of coastal living, it all works together to creating a soothing backdrop to work and relaxing."

Martin Amado: "Total budget less than $800 dollars."

Martin Amado: "One...two...three"

Sonia Nieves: "Wow my god! I cannot believe it"

Martin Amado: "When dealing with a small space it's important that you divide the room into functional areas, and then also keep the colors consistent throughout so that everything blends. Keep that in mind and you are on your way to style success."
