If gardening is your passion, you know how much it can cut into your finances. Seven's Robbin Simmons is showing us the best tips to landscape for less on tonight's Smart Shopping.

WSVN -- Creating beautiful landscapes for your home can creep up on your budget but not if you dig around before touching ground.

Ileana Rabelo: "What they need to research beforehand is the kind of plant material that they are going to use and to remember the zone that they're in."

Landscapers know best when it comes to picking out the right plants for your home.

Ileana Rabelo: "Rabelo Landscaping has been in business for more than 20 years."

And a landscaper who also grows their own tress can offer some of the best deals.

Ileana Rabelo: "We are two companies in one. We are growers, we have a nursery."

Because you're skipping the middle man, trees and plants can be at least 10 percent cheaper.

Now, if you're more of a do-it-yourself type of person, you'll be hitting your local garden centers, but smart shoppers know how to save there as well.

Home Depot shopper: "I'm just going to do seeds, instead of buying the plants, start from a fresh start."

At Home Depot, experts say, if you've got a good green thumb, there's an easy way to save.

Jeremy Tucker, Home Depot: "We have a wide selection of landscaping plants. Buy small and wait for the spring time to grow in."

As always check out the weekly fliers most stores have regular markdowns in the garden section.

Jeremy Tucker: "We also have the gardener's club, which a customer can apply online and receive additional discounts."

Finally, just because you're not a landscaper that doesn't mean you can't get wholesale prices.

Jorge Rodriguez, Ordyan Corporation: "There's a minimum of like five to 10 trees per purchase, but you'll be saving at least 60 to 70 percent on each tree."

Ordyan Corporation will work with homeowners to negotiate the best price. This is best for people doing a major landscaping project, like planting big tress all around your home or pool.

Jorge Rodriguez: "You are going to be able to get fresh palms coming right off the dirt. They are healthy, they haven't been sitting on an inventory at a distributor."

Robbin Simmons: "Another money saver, check out the gardens of your friends and family. You can trade plants and plant clippings, so you don't have to always buy new."
