Smart Shopping: Best Time To Buy
Sometimes getting a great deal is all about timing. In tonight's Smart Shopping, Seven's Robbin Simmons is showing us when you can get the best deals on just about anything.
WSVN -- Savvy shoppers spot out sales, use coupons and check for promotions, but to land a great deal you often need to know exactly when to buy. It's called the seasonal calendar.
Sonya Perez, Miami-Dade Consumer Services: "A little Internet research and you'll pull the information you need to save big."
Nancy Wolin always goes by this shopping tool. She was able to get a car lease with lots of extra freebies.
Nancy Wolin: "I got a lot of bells and whistles in the car. I got an iPod, Sirius Radio and upgrade, just so they can move the car."
Sonya Perez from Miami-Dade consumer services says dealerships will tend to give extra specs and better prices in November and December.
Sonya Perez: "According to Consumer Reports, they're trying to get rid of the old models or getting new models and putting those on sale."
And Monday morning is the best day to drive off in your new car.
Sonya Perez: "Buying cars on a Monday is better than trying to shop for a car on a weekend because the sales associates make most of their sales on the weekends."
Which means the sales person may get you a better deal because it's a slow sales day. When it comes to appliances, take advantage of the big bang holiday sales.
Nancy Wolin: "One of the sales you can find during labor day are for refrigerators."
If you love sparking up the grill and are thinking about purchasing one, wait until fall.
Sonya Perez: "In October, gas grills tend to be on sale because the summer is over, and they are trying to clear that out from their inventory."
And don't forget about the after-Christmas sales for new clothes.
Nancy Wolin: "Christmas time we wake up really, really early to go to certain stores to save 50 percent off on a lot of promotions."
When the new year rolls around, update your bed sheets.
Sonya Perez: "January is traditionally known as the white linen sale, where you can get bedding and sheets and things of that nature."
Then, for great TV markdowns, Sonya says to shop around in spring.
Sonya Perez: "March, you see TVs."
Nancy Wolin: "I got this flat screen for $800, brand name."
For now, summer is great if you're looking to buy outdoor furniture, sports gear and swim suits. After it's over, start thinking about back-to-school.
Sonya Perez: "September items on sale tend to be back-to-school items, backpacks, pencils, notebooks."
And we can't forget about electronics.
Sonya Perez: "You can really get good deals on electronics when new models come out, but get the deals on the older models that maybe the line has discontinued."
Nancy says she'll keep following this seasonal calendar for as long as she shops.
Nancy Wolin: "You could see a considerable amount of savings. It gives you ching ching for the next thing, so it's a good feeling."
