If you watch American Idol, you can forget finding another William Hung this year. The idol reject remains as popular as ever. But what you likely didn't know is William can partially credit South Florida for his success. Here's Louis Aguirre with more on helping out hung.
WSVN -- He's actually been called the Hong Kong Ricky Martin.
Who can ever forget William Hung singing "She Bangs?" Well, if you ever listened to William's CD, you know there's only one original song.
William obviously sings it. But do you know who wrote it? Lets face it, the big winner last year wasn't her...It was him!
Who can forget America's most adored least talented singer? William hung has sold over 100,000 copies of his CD "Inspiration."
But you know what they say, behind every not so talented man is a very talented man. And in this case, Sal Alvarez is the guy who lets it all hung out. The South Florida songwriter wrote the one original song on William Hung's album.
Sal Alvarez: "It's the kind of song that's easy to sing a long with, its very catchy, the hook is very easy."
The name of the song is "Free." It's tune number 11 on the CD, right in between Elton John's "Rocket Man" and "Circle of Life." Sal wrote it after 9-11.
This is video of William singing the song in studio last year. Talk about a 16th minute of fame. "Free" wasn't even supposed to be on the CD. Sal is friends with the album's producer.
When William heard the song, he liked it and recorded it in one hour.
Sal: "There is some talent there. He's not the bad of a singer."
But are we talking about the same William Hung who was berated on national TV?
Simon: "You can't sing, you can't dance, what do you want me to say?
William: "I have no professional training in singing."
Simon: "No really."
Sal believes its that honesty that endears people.
With William, you get what you see.
Sal: "I think he brings something very genuine that the music business has been lacking for a very long time."
And according to Sal, that genuine attitude is the same on camera as it is off camera.
Whether he's signing autographs or performing at a sporting event, William has learned people can't get enough of William.
Sal: "There's something about the way I act that is captivating people. What do you call makes good TV."
And for Sal, makes a really good, really memorable single.
Sal: "He did a great job. I hope he gets the chance to record a second or third album and im part of it."
At first, the American Idol people actually applauded William on the release of his CD. But more recently, they say it makes a mockery out of the show.
The always quotable Simon Cowell said everybody who bout the CD needs to get a life.
