Families everywhere are trying to save money, and a new game we first told you about is helping people cut their grocery bills by more than half. Seven's Belkys Nerey shows us how savvy South Florida shoppers are using the Grocery Game to save big bucks.
WSVN -- It's the sweet sound of savings. We first showed you how to save big at the supermarket back in March with the Grocery Game.
Teri Gault: "The Grocery Game is a web site that helps people save money and also a lot of time by publishing the advertised and unadvertised sales, and the coupons to go with those sales and where to find them."
Mom Michele Hedges has been playing ever since she saw the story on Seven News.
Michele Hedges: "When I first saw the story on Channel Seven, I thought it would be a nice idea to try it out and figure out how to save money."
And so far she's racking up the savings.
Michele Hedges: "I was saving anywhere between $30 to $50 every time I went shopping."
Grocery Game founder Teri Gault came back to South Florida to meet Michele and show her how to save even more.
Teri Gault: "Hi, Michele, nice to meet you. Want to save some money?"
Michele Hedges: "Yes, great, let's go for it."
Some of the biggest savings come in the produce aisles.
Teri Gault: "Here we've got this corn. It's eight for $2, which is fantastic."
That breaks down to just 25 cents an ear. For Michele's family, stocking up on their favorites when they're on sale is a big saver.
Michele Hedges: "I love it when we can stockpile things like juice. We've got four coupons, normally they're $2.99 and this comes to a $1 each."
Teri advises Michele to also look for items that are buy one get one free and match it up with a coupon.
Teri Gault: "This is a BOGO. This is a buy one get one free, and when we have this BOGO with $1.25 off too, it comes to 76 cents a bottle."
From cleaning supplies to beauty products, Teri's concept of matching coupons with weekly sales adds up to big savings.
Teri Gault: "This is a great sale because it says limit four. That's the key to knowing we're getting a great deal here, and we are. We're going to combine with the coupon. We're going to get this shampoo for 41 cents a bottle."
Now it's time to check out and see how much Michele saved after ringing up the in-store savings with Teri's coupons.
The total tally for all these groceries is...
Teri Gault: "Today we got $158 worth of groceries for $52, and it was a cartload."
Michele Hedges: "Teri was fantastic. She made it very easy to understand the way it worked a little bit better."
And Michele plans to keep shopping and saving with the Grocery Game list.
Michele Hedges: "I tend to spend less money and tend not to buy frivolous things that I see. I buy what I need and I get out. I've saved quite a bit of money that way."
Belkys Nerey: "You can do a four-week trial of the grocery game for a dollar. After that, it's 10 bucks every eight weeks."
