From shock and sadness, to steamy scandals, Hollywood was rocked in 2009. We begin our look back at the year that is our first of seven installments: the biggest stories in entertainment. 7's Louis Aguirre has it.

WSVN -- The year of 2009 began with a story that shocked everyone. Twenty-year-old pop diva Rihanna was brutally beaten by her 21-year-old boyfriend, hip-hop star Chris Brown. The couple got into a big argument while driving home from a pre-Grammy party that ended in violence.

Judge: "How do you now plea?"

Chris Brown: "Guilty."

There was a tragic start to the year for John Travolta. Travolta and wife Kelly Preston's 16-year-old autistic son Jett died in the Bahamas, the day after New Year's, when he suffered a seizure in the family's vacation home.

Perez Hilton: "Miss California lost because she's a dumb &*^%$#"."

It was a controversial year for Queen of Mean Perez Hilton. The celebrity blogger caused much brouhaha as a judge for the Miss USA Pageant when he asked Miss California how she felt about gay marriage.

Miss California: "I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, no offense to anyone."

This was not the answer Hilton was looking for. Miss California lost the pageant, became a spokesperson for a national group opposing gay marriage and also lost her crown for breach of contract.

Many people thought Kanye West lost it at the MTV Video Music Awards. Taylor Swift won for Best Video, beating out Beyonce. Kanye West was ticked and crashed Swift's moment.

Kanye West: "I'm really happy for you. I'm going to let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time."

Actress Mackenzie Phillips made a shocking revelation in 2009. The 70s sitcom star dropped a bombshell in her autobiography when she admitted that for years she had consensual sex with her father, the Mamas and the Papas singer John Phillips.

David Letterman: "I have had sex with women who work for me on this show."

Late night host David Letterman also came clean with his dirty secrets after he was allegedly blackmailed by a CBS producer who was later arrested and charged with extortion.

Also, a big Hollywood break up occurred in 2009. After 23 years of marriage, superstar couple Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins called it quits. They never married but had two kids.

An American Idol shocker: Paula Abdul out and Ellen Degeneres in.

Ellen Degeneres: "I am going to be the new judge on American Idol! Woooooo!"

Another Idol whammy took place when underdog Kris Allen took the Idol title from the early fan favorite, glam rocker Adam Lambert.

Ryan Seacrest: "Kris Allen! Wooooo!"

But Adam Lambert still managed to steal the spotlight, first by coming out on the cover of Rolling Stone and then by causing a stink after a sexually charged, racy performance at the American Music Awards.

Across the pond, homely Susan Boyle stole our hearts with her angelic voice. But fame proved to be too much for the small town Scottish singer who had a nervous breakdown before she came in second place on Britain's Got Talent. Her debut album soared up the charts and hit No. 2 on iTunes' best sellers list.

Jon Gosselin: "We're going to do destructive man stuff."

Octoparents Jon and Kate Gosselin split up, and it got nasty. Their reality show, Jon and Kate Plus Eight, was canceled.

On a much better reality show, hometown girl Janine Mason of Pinecrest took the So You Think You Can Dance title.

Louis Aguirre: "Oh, I'm sweet and savory and spicy. Wow!"

Also in 2009, 7's own Louis Aguirre won a nationwide contest and filled in for Regis Philbin on Live!

But the big winner of 2009 was New Moon. The Twilight sequel shattered box office records by bringing in a whopping $140 million in its opening weekend and causing fan frenzy all over South Florida.

It was a crazy year in the world of entertainment. We laughed, we cried and said goodbye to an icon.

Jermaine Jackson: "My brother, the legendary King of Pop, passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 2:26 p.m."

By all accounts, 2009 was quite the year, and it is time to do it all over again.
