Celebrities: They entertain us and amaze us. But 2006 seemed to be a year that they spent shocking us. Seven's Louis Aguirre takes a look back at 2006's top entertainment headlines.
WSVN -- 2006 was the year of the Hollywood baby boom. Pop princess Britney Spears popped out her second baby boy almost a year to the date she gave birth to her first baby, Sean Preston. Don't worry, we're not done with Britney yet ... not by a long shot.
Baby Brangelina was also born in the '06. After hiding from the paparrazi in a very secluded African resort in Namibia, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie became the proud parents of a baby girl they named Shilo Nouvelle.
Hot momma Gwen Steffani had a baby boy. So did Oscar (R) winner Gwyneth Paltrow.
Madonna heated up the Triple-A with two sold out concerts, but it was her recent adoption of a 1-year-old African baby boy that really drew fire.
Tom Cruise also became a daddy. Katie Holmes gave birth to a little girl named Suri. Suri was there seven months later when TomKat made it official, as they tied the knot in a lavish star-studded ceremony in a castle in Italy.
But by far the most bizzarre new baby story of the '06 goes to Anna Nicole Smith. Anna gave birth to a baby girl, but then in a crazy twist, her 20-year-old son, Daniel, died in her hopsital room just three hours later after taking a deadly combination of methadone and sleeping pills. The death was ruled an accident, and now the big question is who's the real father of Anna's baby?
Break-ups also big in the '06. Paul McCartney split from his wife, Heather Mills, and the gloves are off. This divorce is nasty. Two-time Oscar (R) winner Hillary Swank and husband Chad Lowe broke up, and so did Pamela Anderson and new hubby Kid Rock. Lance Armstrong broke up with Sheryl Crowe, but she survived and battled back from a bout with breast cancer.
Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston broke up for real and not just on screen. Meantime, Owen Wilson played the role of not just a wedding crasher but also marriage crasher. Kate Hudson split from hubby Chris Robinson after hooking up with Owen on the set of You, Me and Dupree.
Star Jones broke up with The View and ticked off Barbara Walters, who was going to fire her anyway.
Rosie O'Donnel took over for Meredith Viera, who also split from the View when she took over for Katie Couric at the Today Show. Couric jumped to CBS to do the evening news. Meantime, CBS broke up with Bob Barker when the charismatic host retired after 35 years at the helm of the Price is Right.
Houston, we got a problem. Whitney dumped husband Bobby Brown and cleaned up her act after stories and pictures surfaced alledging she'd turned into a crack addict. Christy Brinkley dumped husband Peter Cook after he got caught having an affair with his then 17-year-old assistant.
The most shocking split of the '06 belongs to Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Philippe. The most not-so-shocking split? Brintey and K-Fed. We saw that one coming from a mile away. Too bad he didn't and got dumped via text message.
Hollywood party girls also made headlines. Paris Hilton dropped a CD, but it was a single margarita she says got her busted for a DUI. Her simple life co-star and former BFF, Nicole Richie, also popped for driving under the influence after smoking marijuana and taking a vicodin.
But the biggest DUI story of the year goes to Mel Gibson, who launched into an anti-Semitic tirade against the deputy who pulled him over on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Mel later apologized and went straight to rehab.
Not be outdone, comedian Michael Richards, a.k.a. Kramer from Seinfeld, had a racist meltdown on stage at a Los Angeles comedy club after being heckled by two black audience members. Richards also apologized but was banned from performing at The Laugh Factory ever again.
It wasn't all bad, though.
A soulful silver fox was crowned this year's American Idol. While an Aussie country crooner, Keith Urban, married Oscar (R) winner Nicole Kidman in a fairytale wedding down under. Just months after the honeymoon, Keith landed in rehab.
There is no doubt about it. 2006 was one crazy year in Tinseltown. From meltdowns to throwdowns, break-ups to hook-ups and babies being born to babes flashing porn, the world of entertainment gets crazier by the year.
