Style File: DJ School
It's not your childhood music lesson aspiring DJs from all over South Florida are learning to mix and match music like the pros and become the hit of the party. Seven's belkys Nerey takes us for a spin through DJ school in tonight's Style File.
WSVN -- It's not a party in South Florida without a DJ.
Jamie Keogh, DJ Immortal: "I think the DJ is a god at a party. They can make you laugh, make you cry, make you dance."
Jamie Keogh AKA DJ Immortal has been djing for more than 15 years, and is ready to teach you how to spin like a pro at Scratch DJ Academy in the Design District.
Jamie Keogh: "Scratch is the first official DJ school in the world. It was started back 2002 by Jam Master J of Run DMC. It's just like a college course, except it's all hands on DJing."
Several nights a week aspiring DJs pack this room to learn all the in's and out's of rocking out.
Jamie Keogh: "They learn beat matching, how to mix, pretty much how to keep the party going, and they will learn basic scratching too."
Joseph Vargas: "It's not really showing you, but they really explain the terminology, even the history, it really made you appreciate the art of DJing."
Joseph Vargas known as DJ Bounce learned so much he recently quit his job to DJ full time.
Joseph Vargas: "It's really exciting ever since then I've been non-stop. I'm DJing almost every day from private parties to clubs."
Beginners and intermediates can take an intensive six week course, then hopefully break out from there.
Haydee Rancel: "I love music and I want to learn more and more about DJing and hopefully I get good enough to spin at clubs and parties."
Students get unlimited access to the school and the equipment ... So they can keep getting better.
Carlos Diaz: "That's the advantage that I like here, that we can come any time and work on what we are learning."
And for those who want to play their own original music in the clubs, Scratch also offers a music production class.
Cliff Melerne, Master of Music production: "We're teaching them how to actually compose and remix their own music."
Everyone has to start somewhere so why not from scratch.
Belkys Nerey: "The six week DJ class costs $300."
