Whether you prefer red or white, wines have become a pivotal part of most meals. But there's no need to travel cross-country to sample the best spirits. In tonights Style File, we are taking a tour of a winery located right here in South Florida.
WSVN--When you think fine wine, france or california might come to mind. But here in the tropics -- we can boast about our own wine. And no grapes are needed because this vino comes from exotic fruits.
Peter Schnebly: "There are over 5,000 places that make wine out of grapes, that's nothing new, but that to make it out of an exotic tropical fruit, is really special."
And this special spirit is made at Schnebly's Winery in the Redlands. Veteran fruitgrowers Peter and Denisse Schnebly came up with the idea after a littlebit of experimentation. The result: A delicious treat.
Peter Schnebly: "I think that most people when they taste our wines they are shocked that we didn't make overly sweet wines."
Some of the ingredients they use include mango and passion fruit. And their lychee wine took top honors recently at the florida state international wine competition.
Peter Schnebly: "We are really proud because we've only entered two competitions, one won three bronzes and one gold medal."
Head on over to the winery and see the process for yourself firsthand. Weekend tours of the facility will set you back only 10 dollars and come with a wine tasting and some snacks. Wine lover julie hooper heard of the schnebly winery from a friend and decided to check out the fruity flavors.
Julie Hooper: "They are very complex, they are very good they are just really nice to have in the hot climate down here."
So next time you and your tastebuds are in the mood for adventure just uncork your curiosity.
Julie Hooper: "We had a lot of people tell us we couldn't do it, we wouldn't succeed and we found none of that to be true."
The tours are only available on the weekend but the Schnebly winery tasting room is open daily from
