Think of it as a workout that really kicks butt. A new form of Tae Kwon Do not only makes you physically but mentally stronger. It's a program gaining popularity nationwide, and it started here in South Florida. 7's Belkys Nerey has more in tonight's Style File.
WSVN -- Jet Li is a master at it, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles used it to kick butt. But if you want to fight like the 'Karate Kid' and have washboard abs you need to learn Shim Myung Do.
"There is more than just physical workouts. There's learning that, physically, you work out the body; mentally, you get positive results, and you start to feel good about yourself. Then, spiritually, you become a better person."
At Master Rod's International Martial Arts on Miami Beach you learn the principles of self defense, self control and personal development while getting a great workout.
Karen Guerra: "We don't only focus on the physical but on the mind. They teach us to focus on our goals."
Master Rod created Shim Myung Do by combining several Korean martial art forms.
Karen Guerra: "Shim Myung Do evolved when I saw it necesary to explain exactly what martial arts is when Tae Kwon Do was going in the wrong path -- more sports-oriented than martial arts is."
So, instead of two separate cardio and yoga classes, you can take a one-hour class that Master Rod claims will strengthen your muscles and your mind.
Another bonus is that you will get a little self-defense workout in the process.
Jeff Felton: "Hopefully we never have to apply the self-defense. In my case, I had to, once or twice, but it becomes natural."
Some parents make their workouts a family affair by getting their kids involved to learn self-discipline and respect.
Erline Fernandez: "If you have an energetic, hyperactive child like I do, this is the cure."
Raiko Martinez: "If you want to defend yourself and learn new things and have fun too, come to Shim Myung Do."
If you are thinking of taking one of Master Rod's classes, there are three locations throughout Miami. Prices are on a monthly basis and start at $100.
