You hear it every summer from your kids: "I'm bored." This year, let them go from being bored to a real board, a skateboard, that is. 7's Belkys Nerey takes us to a rad skate camp for kids In tonight's Style File.
WSVN -- Summer on the West Coast, surfers are the kings of cool, but, when it comes to boards, this is how we roll here in South Florida.
If your boys and girls of summer are looking for some kick flips on their time off, they can drop in at Base Camp in Coconut Grove.
Cody: "It's the only place to skate, and all the other camps are just boring."
This camp takes the word boring out of their vocabulary. Coaches teach your little daredevil to board from beginner to real skater level.
Marcos: "I can do a lot of tricks. I can do swtich-blunt-on-the-fakie. I can do drop-in and out of ramps."
Shane: "Skateboarding disciplines you. It's tough, and all of the kids have learned that."
While the kids are tricked out, Mom and Dad can relax knowing they're in good hands. Oh, and helmets.
CC Levin: "I absolutely, without a doubt, feel good about my son being here in the summer. I feel they're safe and being looked after."
Susan Ratcliff: "When he started here he couldn't skate at all, now he's on those big ramps. He just loves it."
But the camp isn't just for skater dudes. Campmaster Gregg Hinds makes sure the kids get to try out other fun things.
They long-board around the grove, go fishing, play video games. If it's cool, they do it.
Gregg Hinds: "It's very old school. The whole idea is to let kids run around like they used to, without parents worrying about what they do."
But these kids, well, they mostly come for one thing.
Marcos: "If I had one thing to do here, it would be to skate with 'mi amigos.'"
The skate camp is Monday through Friday and goes from about 9:30 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon.
