Style File: Sweet Treats
If you're looking for a gift for Father's Day or a party favor for a wedding or shower, there's nothing like a homemade, sweet treat to make someone feel special. 7's Belkys Nerey introduces us to some local women who've created decadent desserts for any occasion in tonight's Style File
WSVN -- It seems like Kelley Baker was well destined to be a baker.
Kelley Baker: "I've always baked. It started with my grandmother and my mom, so it's interesting that I ended up marrying someone named Baker."
It wasn't until her youngest son became very sick that the tasty hobby became a lifesaver for the mom.
Kelley Baker: "My son was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia, and it was kind of a distraction for me. He's doing fine now, so it's a happy ending story."
Now, Kelley wants to create a happy ending for others. During that rough time she mastered two special types of gourmet baked goods and started, Chocolate 4 Charity. She's selling the goodies to help families with children undergoing cancer treatment.
Kelley Baker: "It's the gift that keeps giving, because all my money I donate back to charity."
Her bite-sized treats are decadent. There's the crunchy, English toffee that's hand dipped in Fench chocolate and rolled in a mixture of nuts.
Feroza Gutta: "You have to taste, they are the best ever."
And her truly unique chocolate expresso brownie.
Kelley Baker: "It's more of a cross between a fudge and flourless chocolate cake."
Feroza Gutta: "My kids love them. I just ordered a batch because my son said, 'I need brownies.' Kelly is on my speed dial."
Kelley also sells gifts, like pretty platters and glass spreaders or she'll simply wrap-up the chocolates for any occasion.
Kelley Baker: "Wedding favors, baby shower favors, teacher's gifts. I'll either package them in a box or the little individual bags in cellophane."
Food writer, Linda Bladholm, had her own reasons for starting Mermaid Sea Salt Toffee.
Linda Bladholm, Mermaid Sea Salt Toffee: "I started making toffee when I was a kid because my mom wouldn't buy candy, but she would buy the ingredients, so I would have to make it myself. So, I became a candy expert."
When the job market started spiraling down Linda wanted something to fall back on, so she cooked up the idea to make and sell handmade toffee.
This is not your typical toffee, each piece is layered with spices and flavor.
Linda Bladholm: "They all get sprinkled with sea salt, then about half of them curry powder, then dried coconut chips, dried lavender and crystallized ginger."
Along with the spice she also spikes it with any kind of booze you like!
Linda Bladholm: "From Rum to Baileys to Jack Daniels. It just adds another layer of flavor, it's not enough to get you drunk or anything."
William, Customer: "The flavor and taste is fantastic. One of the things that I like about the sea salt toffee is that it kinda takes you back to a different time. Back to a simpler time."
Simple, sweet treats sure to make any occasion special.
