Style File: Baby Cakes
Get this: Expectant parents are asking bakers, not doctors, to reveal the sex of their baby. 7's Belkys Nerey shows us this sweet new tradition in tonight's Style File.
WSVN -- A girl or a boy?
When you're expecting a baby, you want to share what you're having with family and friends.
Raquel Suarez, New Mom: "We wanted them to share the element of joy and surprise that we had when we found out."
So how about letting a baker deliver the big news inside a cake?
Elizabeth Soto, Expectant Mom: "The evidence of our ultrasound is here. We turned it over to our cake lady. She knows, but we have no idea."
It's a new trend called "gender cakes."
Bakers design a cake with neutral icing, and the big reveal comes when you cut the cake.
Gaby Triana, Cakes by Gaby: "When they cut into it, they find out if it's a boy or girl by the color of the cake, so if it's going to be a boy, we'll tint it blue, or if it's a girl, we make it pink."
Gaby Triana from Cakes by Gaby has come up with all kinds of fun ways to surprise everyone.
She does cakes shaped like liquor bottles for dads, infused with his favorite liqueur, something to calm his nerves after receiving the big news.
Gaby Triana: "Once the dads find out, they usually end up drinking the entire bottle of vodka along with the cake."
She can also make the cake interactive.
Gaby Triana: "The tag says, 'Pull ribbon.' The dad or grandma can pull, so here you would pull the ribbon, and it says, 'It's a boy.'"
Or how about cupcakes for guests at your baby shower with colored pacifiers inside?
Gaby Triana: "On the count of three, we're all going to pull. One, two, three. Ah, it's a girl."
New mom Raquel Suarez had Gaby bake her a circus-themed cake for her baby shower.
Raquel Suarez: "When we cut it open, it was blue, and so our guests were able to know we had one more boy in the family. The cake was absolutely gorgeous. It tasted even better than it looked, if that's possible."
We were there as Elite Cake Creations delivered this gorgeous gender cake to parents-to-be Elizabeth and JohnPaul Soto.
Elizabeth Soto: "We did the sonogram, and we decided to wait and share this special moment with our family and friends. I am so nervous. I'm dying to find out."
Everyone was holding their breath as Elizabeth sliced open the cake and got the big news.
Man: "It's a girl."
Elizabeth Soto: "As soon as I pulled out the knife and saw pink, I was like, 'Yeah, so it's a little girl.'"
JohnPaul Soto: "The whole suspense of cutting the cake was so emotional, so exciting."
Yep, it's a girl.
Delivering this kind of news is a piece of cake.
Belkys Nerey: "Baby cakes cost pretty much the same as any cake, and you can tell the baker exactly what you want."
