He is probably one of the most controversial entertainers in America. But the Eminem Empire just keeps growing. This week the Grammy Award winning rapper hits the big screen in his first feature film.
Eminem says, "The positive aspect of the movie is that no matter where you come from you can break out of that..."
Eminem plays Jimmy....an angry white rapper trying to make it big despite his race and trailer-park roots.
The film is loosely based on Eminem's life story.
Even though the Grammy Award winning rapper says he'd been offered movie roles in the past, this one felt right.
"I always felt if i was gonna do a movie i wanted it to be first of all authentic and have a reason to do it not just bank off of my success or anything like that..."
And unlike Mariah Carey's Glitter, Eminem is getting rave reviews for his first big screen debut....he's in practically every scene in the film...prior to filming he and the cast rehearsed for two months..
"This movie took me back to that time and place stripped me of all ego before I was Eminem before I was anybody I had to go back to that.."
Eminem says if the critics are raving it's due in part to L.A. Confidential Director Curtis Hanson....
"I put trust in him I didn't look at any playbacks I felt like if I felt real in a scene then whatever then it should come out right..."
And Curtis put his trust in Eminem when it came to rap scenes and the movies soundtrack...
"If I wasn't rehearsing trying to memorize my lines for the movie you know I was writing I had a pen in hand literally they would say action and I would have to give my pen and paper to somebody and go into the scene..."
Kim Basinger, Brittany Murphy and Mekhi Phifer round out the 8 Mile cast...the movie opens Friday...
