What Would You Do: Fear Of Bullies
Now, that summer is almost here, many kids will have extra free-time. And that means more fun and games, but it can also mean more trouble. Like what would your child do if he was approached by a bully? Here's 7's Charles Perez.
(WSVN) -- A lot of kids have had to face situations like this.
An older child starts picking on them.
Bullying them.
But most kids haven't got a clue on how to get out of a situation like this.
So what do you do.
Karate instructor Master Sang says, "Two three four five and kick Ah ya."
Master Sang ... A karate instructor teaches kids how to handle a bully.
The first line of defense .. offer to be friends ... Just like Roberto did.
Next, try suggesting an activity or making the bully laugh.
Master Sang says, "Using humor ... Changing the energy ... you don't want to fight him. Say something nice. Hey let's go."
If the bully still wants to fight .. it's time to try and get help.
Master Sang says, "He's going to speak clearly, with confidence, to not bother me, leave me alone..."
But if the kid has to fight, it's important to know how to fight right.
Watch how little caroline takes down one of her instructors.
Master Sang says, "She's going to step on toe .. When she step on toe, it's going to be hurting him."
Next she kicks him in the groin.
Master Sang says, "Number three she go elbow to the head then number four with the knee to the head. Yes."
But what about 9-year-old Robert.
We decided to see how he'd do against a much bigger bully... Say somebody like me.
Charles Perez says, "Hey Hey Hey ... Alright I'm running scared alright."
Charles Perez says, "Ya, you can really hurt me. But also, just seeing you do that is scary. Even when you're two feet taller than him? Ya even two feet taller than him."
Watch again and see what I mean.
Charles says, "When I see those feet coming up and he's kicking ... it's almost like he's floating or flying in front of me. That's scary."
And that is why Robert's dad enrolled him in the class.
Rob Ramirez, Robert's father says, "I would want him to be prepared for anything that might happen."
Charles Perez. Seven news.
Next week, it can happen at a concert, a sporting event, or even a protest. What do you do if you get caught up in a sea of people to avoid getting trampled?
