NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (WSVN) -- A local political candidate is safe after being robbed at gunpoint.

The gunman stole Marleine Bastien's purse in the parking lot of the House of the Living God, a church located at 13700 NE 10th Ave. at around 12:20 p.m., Saturday.

Bastien, who is running for the District 17 state congressional seat, was sitting in a vehicle with her driver at the time of the crime. "He opened the door, put the gun to my head, and then looked a little bit puzzled. I don't know if he recognized me or something, who he was dealing with. Then, he said, 'Give me your purse, or I'll blow your brain out,'" said Bastien.

The thief made off with Bastien's cell phone, wallet and other personal property. She and her driver were not harmed.
