SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- An 18-month-old boy drowned after stepping into a swimming pool.

According to police, the boy stepped into the pool and was found floating by family members, Saturday.

Neighbors heard the victim's grandfather scream when he discovered the boy in the backyard of the family's pool. "My husband looked over the fence, and he saw the grandfather on top of the baby," said Claudia Gonzalez.

Gonzalez then jumped the fence to try to save the boy's life. "I pumped his chest, but he wasn't coming, he was purple. We just kept on trying," said Gonzalez. "His eyes were out. It was bad."

It is unknown how long the boy was in the water. "I don't know how long he was in there for," said Gonzalez.

Neighbors witnessing the event ran into the street when rescue crews arrived. "He looked purple, lifeless, like a rag doll," said Martha Duran.

Rescue crews took over CPR and rushed the boy to West Baptist Hospital, where doctors pronounced the boy dead.

Police said the grandfather was watching the boy when he may have wandered into the family's backyard pool.

The death is believed to be accidental.
