Legal group helps homeless woman recover money
MIAMI (WSVN) -- A local organization has helped a homeless woman recover some much-needed money.
On Monday, members of Lawyers to the Rescue presented Christina Amat-Martinez with a $6,000 check. "I'm very happy because I didn't have one cent to my name. I had nothing to live on," Amat-Martinez said in Spanish.
The nonprofit organization worked with state officials and helped Amat-Martinez recover money the state owed her. "She's in a new apartment," said attorney volunteer Scott Kotler, "and she's receiving food stamps, so she will be able to eat, and this check right here will go a long way."
Amat-Martinez has been living in various shelters across South Florida since her husband died. She met with attorney volunteers during one of the group's legal clinics at the Camillus House in Miami.
