MIAMI (WSVN) -- A woman charged in the case of a hit-and-run that left a 6-year-old boy in a wheelchair has bonded out of jail.

Twenty-four-year-old Shemira Brown left jail Tuesday morning on $6,000 bond after turning herself in to police the day before.

Authorities said Brian Wilson, 6, was crossing Lucy Street near Second Avenue in Homestead with his father and 3-year-old brother on Thursday, when Brown reportedly struck him with her car. "She hit me with her bumper," said Wilson. "My dad picked me up off the street and put me on the sidewalk," said Wilson.

The victim's mother, Schielder Riley, said, "[My son] was in the turning lane, right in the middle of the turning lane trying to go across, so when he stuck his leg out to go across, she was coming. I don't know if she didn't see him, but she didn't stop,"

The suspect fled the scene of the accident. "How can she just hit a child and just leave like that? She left my baby helpless like a dog in the street, like she didn't care," said Riley.

Rescue crews transported the child to Homestead Hospital and then to Miami Children's Hospital.

Wilson's right leg was broken in the crash. The 6-year-old is recovering from his injuries, but the hit-and-run left him in a wheelchair with a rod in his leg. "My baby's leg swole instantly," Riley said. "You're gonna look back, and I know she saw that child laying in the road."

Brown has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with great bodily harm and driving with a suspended license.
