Man drowns in canal trying to avoid police

LAUDERHILL, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida man died after jumping into a canal to avoid the police.

Police chased the man before he jumped into a canal near Northwest 16th and State Road 7, Sunday.

An officer dove into the water to try to rescue the man but was unsuccessful. A dive team later pulled the man out of the water.

Rescue crews transported the man to the hospital where he later died.
