PLANTATION, Fla. (WSVN) -- The brother of a Good Samaritan who tried to help two girls in a car wreck before all three were killed by a suspected drunk driver is speaking out.

A car with two young women careened out of control and hit a tree eastbound on Broward Boulevard, just west of Northwest 69th Avenue, in Plantation about 4:30 Saturday morning. Twenty-four-year-old Andrew Edmond stopped his car, travelling in the other direction, to get out to help.

His brother, Anson Edmond, said his younger brother did what he would expect him to do. "[He was] full of life, full of life," Edmond said. "He has a lot of friends."

The Good Samaritan and the two women stood by the wreck, on the road when another car came barreling down the road, killing all of them instantly. A man who called 911 barely escaped injury himself. "I didn't even have enough time to warn anybody," said witness Jonathan Stern. "I took one step back and, 'Boom!' He literally ran the girls over, ripped the girl in half. One girl got dragged down the road and the guy that also stopped to help out was dragged all the way down the road."

"My brother, he did what he had to do," said Edmond. "He's always willing to help."

Plantation Police suspect the driver responsible, 32-year-old Hermes Suarez, of driving drunk. No one answered his door when asked for comment.

In the police report, officers said they found "a glass containing ice and the remnants of an alcoholic substance ... a strong smell of alcohol..." They also said, "Suarez stated he had been drinking at his brother's house and had consumed a quarter of Jack Daniel's"

The report also noted that "not once did he ask about the welfare of the three persons laying in the roadway, not far from where he was sitting."

Plantation Police are awaiting the results of blood alcohol tests as evidence before officially charging him.

In the meantime, the family of the Good Samaritan is making funeral arrangements they never expected to make so early in the victim's life. If you can help the family cover the costs of Edmond's funeral, you can send donations to:
