2 arrested after police find grenades inside home

MIAMI (WSVN) -- Police have arrested two people for allegedly having 10 grenades and other illegal items inside a home.
Police received a call at around 6 p.m. Tuesday about a dispute between the owner of the home, located at 2021 SW 37 Ave., and two people who had been allegedly staying at the home. "The actual owners of this home are from New York, and they came down, and it's possible that these individuals aren't legally renting here and can be squatters," said Miami Police Sgt. Freddie Cruz.
When police arrived at the home, they found cocaine, marijuana, a handgun, a shotgun, about 10 grenades and a pig. "They located what appears to them to be six to 10 grenades. From the information I'm getting, they were actually in a drawer in one of the bedrooms, in an open drawer," said Cruz.
Police immediately shut down the roads of Southwest 37th Avenue, between Alhambra Circle and Coral Way, while the bomb squad and the fire department arrived at the scene.
Maria Jimenez lives about a block away from the scene. "I am very, very scared," she said over the phone. "I'm surrounded by police officers. I have a helicopter on top."
Jimenez said she heard from police, who advised her to stay indoors. "All they're saying is, 'Stay inside, don't walk out,' so I'm very scared," she said.
Specially-trained officers used a bomb-sniffing dog and where able to safely carry out the 10 grenades and transport them to a lab for further testing.
Police then arrested a male and a female found inside the home. "At this moment, we have two arrests. There's a female and a male," said Cruz.
The pair could face federal charges. Officials continue to investigate.
