OPA-LOCKA, Fla. (WSVN) -- The husband, sister and son of Opa-Locka Mayor Myra Taylor have been charged with illegally contributing to her 2010 campaign.

Miami-Dade Police said Elvira Smith, John Taylor and Demetrius Taylor funnelled over $6,000 in illegal campaign contributions and fabricated invoices to throw off an investigation.

"What they originally did in terms of campaign violations was a mistake but the real error began, the real egregious behavior came in, was trying to cover it up," said Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Rundle.

Prosecuters said illegal money flowed into the campaign through a private daycare and a church, both with connections to the Taylor family.

The mayor herself has not been charged in this matter.
