LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. (WSVN) -- A 2-year-old girl has died after rescue crews found her unresponsive in a canal.

Broward Sheriff's Office air rescue lifted off with the toddler bound to Broward General Medical Center, at around 5 p.m., Friday.

BSO deputies responded to a home at 3621 NW 23rd Court after a mother called 911 at around 3 p.m. They searched the area and later found the child in a canal behind the house.

Many units responded, including divers and police K-9 units. It was a police dog that caught her scent and jumped in water, leading police to the girl.

Romelson, the brother of little girl, also helped in the search. "When I came here they told me my little sister was missing, so I took my bike to go look for her," he said.

Nykesha Lee, a neighbor, also helped in the search. "As soon as we were going to go walk up the street [to the park] that's when police came through, and we actually saw what happened, like how they pulled her out in a blanket and all that."

The child was not responsive when she was found and rescuers tried administering CPR before three paramedics carried her over to the helicopter waiting nearby. She arrived at Broward General Medical Center, where she later died.
