Authorities investigate fatal dump truck crash
WEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Authorities are investigating an accident that left one person dead after a dump truck and a car crashed into the side of a home.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, the crash took the life of 20-year-old Eric Stephen Gonzalez, the driver of a 2008 black Nissan left crumpled and upside down under the truck. Family and friends were too distraught to speak on camera about their loss.
Authorities said the impact ignited flames near a house located on Southwest 48th Street and 87th Avenue, around 5 a.m., Friday.
Homeowner Shaisea Mirza said the crash startled her. "I just heard the big sound, me and my husband, and we saw it from my window. So, we ran outside, and we saw the fire. It was a very scary time, so I picked up my kids and ran outside," she said.
Mirza said her husband and the driver of the Waste Management truck attempted to put out the fire. Officials said it was not until police arrived on the scene that they discovered a body inside of the car that was trapped underneath of the truck.
The wreckage was so mangled cranes had to be used to clean up the scene. Police and the medical examiner's officer are now investigating the remains of the vehicles and the deceased.
Dawn McCormick, spokesperson for Waste Management Inc. of Florida issued the following statement: "We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased. The accident is under investigation by Miami-Dade Police. Our driver, who was treated for minor injuries and released, and our Safety team are cooperating fully with the investigation."
Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate.
