Man arrested after raping woman inside hotel room
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police have made an arrest after a woman was raped at a famous Miami Beach hotel.
Rafael Munguia was arrested Thursday evening after police said he raped a 23-year-old woman inside her penthouse suite at the Fontainebleau Hotel at around 7 a.m., Thursday.
According to police, the victim, who is from Beverly Hills, California, was visiting South Florida for the Winter Music Conference. She left her hotel room door slightly open.
Munguia, who was also staying at the hotel, made his was inside her room. "We would classify this as a brutal attack. Any type of sexual encounter like this is considered a brutal crime," said Miami Beach Police detective Vivian Hernandez.
Police said the suspect forced himself on the victim while he smothered her with a pillow. "As she tried to get away, he pushed her down, he held her down, and that's until she basically wakes up and she sees this man on top of her, not knowing who he is," said Hernandez.
Police found Munguia on hotel surveillance video entering and exiting the 15th floor, where the victim was staying.
Munguia was then taken by police, where he later admitted to the rape. "He gave a full confession to detectives, admitting that once he saw the door open, he made his way [in], he saw the victim, and without any hesitation, he proceeded to sexually assault her," said Hernandez.
Hotel guests were alarmed by the news. "This is a public safety issue. Women should feel free to walk around and feel safe," said Jay West, a guest.
The Fontainebleau released the following statement: "This is an isolated incident and all known parties involved (alleged victim, alleged suspect and possible witnesses) have been identified, located and are part of the police investigation off property."
Munguia will remain in jail with no bond.
