FLORIDA CITY, FLA. (WSVN) - - A police-involved shooting has left one man dead in a Florida City apartment.

Florida City detectives were conducting a criminal investigation at an apartment complex when they made contact with an adult male and a confrontation ensued.

The incident took place near Northwest Second Avenue and 14th Street, at around 1:13 p.m., Wednesday.

Twenty-three-year-old Juvon Simon was shot and killed by Florida City detectives inside an apartment, Miami-Dade Police said.

Police later confirmed that Simon was armed at the time of the confrontation.

7Skyforce hovered over the scene where a heavy police presence could be seen, Wednesday afternoon.

No officers were injured.

The officer who fired the weapon was described as a plainclothes detective who was in the middle of an investigation with another detective. The details of that investigation have not been released.

Police said only one of the plainclothes detectives fired.

The detective who opened fire has been with the department for three years, according to officials.

“The two detectives that were involved were Florida City plainclothes detectives,” said Miami-Dade Police Detective Lee Cowart. “They had some sort of confrontation with what appears to be an adult male. Shots were fired and that adult male regrettably is deceased on the scene.”

Yousline Simon, the mother of the man killed, said her son was a good person. She also said, to her knowledge, he did not own any weapons.

“I heard the gunshot, and I went outside where I said probably they shot [him] because he just got out of there,” Simon said, “and when I went in the back of the building — and that’s the time I saw him — he was lying on the floor.”

It remains unknown what led to the shooting.
