SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- One person is dead and five others have been seriously injured after a sport utility vehicle slammed into a sedan early Wednesday morning.

The fatal crash occurred early Fourth of July morning on Southwest 87th Avenue and 52nd Street. "We had a Chevy Blazer heading southbound on Southwest 87th and it appears the black Honda was attempting to make a left turn from Southwest 52nd, and that's when they collided," said Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant John Carvalho.

The driver of the black Honda Accord, 18-year-old Johana Arias, died on the scene. The other four passengers in the car were rushed to Kendall Regional Trauma Center, where they are expected to be OK.

Rescue crews transported the driver of the SUV, 45-year-old Noemi Hernandez, to the hospital with a broken leg.

FHP notified the mother of the 18-year-old's death shortly after the accident. "Her mother said they had been out and she had talked to her daughter before and she was expecting her to come home soon," said Carvalho.

Crews have since towed away the damaged vehicles and re-opened the streets.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. FHP said the SUV did have the right of way.
