MIAMI (WSVN) -- A wandering dog was saved by a Good Samaritan after it fell from an open drawbridge.

David Bernstein saw the scene unfold as a dog was on a drawbridge while the bridge went up. "I knew it was something horrible that was about to happen, so that's why I tried to do something and spring to action, but I came up just a little short," said Bernstein.

Bernstein then got out of his car and rushed for the terrier mix, but it was too late. "The poor girl, she was just trying to hang on from the surface, and she just slid, and I literally missed her by a foot, and she just slid through the cracks here," he said.

After the dog fell 30 feet Tuesday night from the drawbridge that separates Downtown Miami and Brickell, Bernstein searched for hours but could not find her. He then went back to a nearby spot Wednesday morning but still did not find the dog.

Bernstein then spoke to a bridge employee who helped him find her. "She said, 'You know, there might be an opening here,' and I said, 'Let's go!' and she went in there and saw the little guy in the mud," said Bernstein.

The dog was found healthy and covered in water and oil. Bernstein then took her to the Brickell Animal Hospital for treatment, where doctors said she is healthy, and they don't believe she was abandoned.

Bernstein just hopes someone will recognize her so she might be reunited with her family.
