Teacher of the year honored at board meeting

MIAMI (WSVN) -- A Miami-Dade County elementary school instructor recognized as Florida's teacher of the year is being honored by the school board.
Officials honored Pre-K special ed teacher Alex Lopes during a ceremony at Wednesday's school board meeting. The Carol City Elementary School teacher received a plaque honoring him as the 2013 Florida Teacher of the Year.
"It's like a dream come true. I feel very honored, privileged to be in my position," he said. "Also, very humbled. I know my limitations, and I hope to not disappoint anybody."
Macy's awarded Lopes with a $10,000 check at an awards gala in Orlando last Thursday for his achievement.
He has been working for the school system for eight years.
