Video: man allegedly beaten fell while skateboarding

MIAMI (WSVN) -- Surveillance video has revealed that a man who said he was allegedly beaten sustained his injuries following a skateboard accident.

New surveillance video was released Friday telling a different story as to how Rene Betancourt sustained major injuries that left him in a coma.

Betancourt was hospitalized with critical head injuries after what police were told was a violent beating. "According to the video and detectives, Mr. Betancourt was not assaulted or robbed," said Miami Police Officer Kenia Reyes.

The 22-year-old is seen on surveillance footage skateboarding in the parking garage of the UM Medical Center July 13, maneuvering from side to side. He then comes off the board, gets back on it and appears to slam into a wall. He is seen flying off the board and bouncing on the concrete floor.

Betancourt remains motionless for several minutes. Shortly after, an elevator camera captures him unsteadily walking into the elevator. He is seen struggling to press the button during the ride to the ground floor and leans forward before walking out.

Police believe the lapse in time might have made his injuries worse, causing Betancourt to be confused about what happen. "This all happened sometime around 1:30 a.m. some calls were made to family members, and it wasn't till 11:30 that he was taken over to Jackson Memorial Hospital," said Reyes.

Betancourt was released from JMH on Tuesday. For now, Police said he will not face any charges for giving misleading information as the investigating continues.

The alleged beating touched the South Florida community. A skateboarding club hosted a fundraiser to help pay for Betancourt's medical costs. They will now use the money to buy him a helmet and safety pads.

JMH had set up a fund for his medical bills but have not commented at this time.

The family was unavailable for comment.
