Elderly woman robbed by couple
TAMARAC, Fla. (WSVN) -- An elderly South Florida woman was robbed by two impostors asking to test her water.
Jean Drakoulis opened the door of her Tamarac home last Thursday to a couple who said they needed to test her water. "They knocked on the door, and I opened it like a stupid," said Drakoulis.
The 87-year-old said a woman and a man working together acted like professionals. "She took two glasses from here and she put water, and she said 'Your water is very dad don't touch it,'" she said.
Her son, John Drakoulis said the woman was distracting his mother while the man was grabbing his mother's jewelry from her bedroom. "The lady was running the water for about five or 10 minutes and talked to my mother while the other guy told my mother he was going to the bathroom to check the water, but meanwhile he went to the bedroom instead of the bathroom," he said.
The man opened her jewelry box and took everything inside. "They took off with two bracelets, a long chain with a cross on it and a pendent with a Greek eye on it; it's like a charm with gold around it," said John.
After grabbing everything he saw, the crook sneaked out of the home to avoid being spotted. "He was scooping down," said Drakoulis.
According to a neighbor, the couple was driving a dark colored sport utility vehicle. Police are now checking surveillance video from the apartment complex.
The elderly woman said the crooks acted professional and polite. She never suspected them as anything less. "I never thought they were bad people," the victim said.
Drakoulis is now afraid to be in her own home and has constant nightmares. "I'm scared I go to sleep, and I see that guy in my face at night time," she said.
