LAUDERHILL, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida community came together to support a public service aide fighting cancer.

Kayan Wright is in a hospital bed, away from her 4-year-old and 4-month-old. On Thursday, her friends and colleagues came together for a BBQ fundraiser to show her some support. "I mean I thank God every morning when I wake up just to have the support of my family," said Wright via Skype.

"She's got really strong faith, and she's holding on. She's has very high spirits." said sister in law Jaquada Lee

Doctors first attributed her back spasms and leg aches, which forced the 29-year-old to use a walker during her recent pregnancy, leaving her too weak to cradle her newborn.

Wright was then diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer called osteosarcoma.

Family and friends are showing Wright their support. "There's been prayer vigils for her since we found out, do it every day," a friend.

She's a part-time service aide for the Lauderhill Police Department who has touched so many. They say she has helped many. Now it is their time to help her. "Everyone from the community is really helping out. A lot of workers show their support," said fraternal order of police, Andy Kiefer.

If anyone wants to help Wright in her struggle, they can drop off monetary donations to the Lauderhill Police Department, located at 6279 West Oakland Park Boulevard (attn: Officer Michael Gordon) or they can call the Fraternal Order of Police at 954-497-4711.
