New Overtown sports complex now open

MIAMI (WSVN) -- Community leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a newly built park in Overtown.

The Theodore Gibson Park along Northwest 12th Street is a state-of-the-art sports complex equipped with a football and baseball field, an aquatic center and other amenities.

"We want to thank everyone for their effort because this is a new, state-of-the-art sports complex that our people, old and young, can be proud of," said City of Miami District 5 Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones. "It's a place where families can come and be safe."

The park also has a recreational building.

The project is part of Spence-Jones' plan to redevelop the Overtown neighborhood of Miami.
