1 dead in head-on collision

SUNRISE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida driver is dead after colliding head-on with a sport utility vehicle.

The fatal accident happened at about 3 a.m. Friday near Northwest 42nd Street and University Drive. According to Sunrise Police, the only witness in this accident is the driver of the SUV. "He said he was southbound on University around 3 a.m.," said Sunrise Police Department Sergeant Rodney Haley, " and as he was coming this way, the tan BMW was northbound in the southbound lane."

Investigators said the driver of the BMW was traveling in the wrong direction. Both drivers reportedly tried to avoid the accident but could not, slamming into each other head on.

The driver of the BMW died on scene.

Rescue crews transported the driver of the SUV to a local hospital with minor injuries.
