FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- An Oct. 12 sentencing date has been set for a teenager convicted in a vicious 2010 head-stomping attack on a girl at a Florida middle school.

Seventeen-year-old Wayne Treacy faces a maximum sentence of 50 years behind bars for the assault on Josie Lou Ratley, who was then 15. Ratley was left with permanent brain injuries.

Treacy was convicted in July of attempted murder for an attack in which he used steel-toed boots to kick and stomp Ratley. Treacy was enraged by a text message exchange with Ratley in which she made a reference to his brother's recent suicide.

Jurors rejected Treacy's insanity defense that was based on post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from the brother's death. But experts on both sides agreed Treacy needs mental treatment.
