Walmart employee shot and killed during shoplifting

MARGATE, FLA. (WSVN) -- Police said a store employee was shot and killed while he was trying to stop a shoplifter.

The shooting occurred at the Walmart located at 5555 West Atlantic Boulevard in Margate Friday night.

According to police, Luis Jhon, a Walmart security employee was trying to stop a shoplifter from stealing two packets of under shirts. The suspect then pulled out a gun and shot Jhon.

Jhon was transported to the hospital where he died.

The shooter fled the scene on foot and went to a near by neighborhood. Police said a resident reported a gunshot noise in the area. The suspect was later located by police deceased from a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Walmart employees said the victim was an excellent employee. "The police department worked with him for a number of years and it’s a very sad day tonight. Employees are very saddened. They are grieving the lost of this gentlemen," said an officer.

Police continue to investigate.
