Motorcycle officer in critical condition after crash

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A Broward Sheriff's Office deputy is in critical condition after he was involved in a bad wreck Thursday afternoon.
According to police, 47-year-old Deputy Christopher Schaub is a 22-year veteran and worked out of Pompano Beach district. He is currently in surgery in extremely critical condition and "fighting for his life."
Authorities had to completely shut down the intersection of McNab Road and North Andrews Avenue, where the collision between the motorman and a Mercedes occurred just before 2:30 p.m. It would not reopen until 6 p.m., as police continued their investigation.
Rescue crews airlifted the deputy to Broward Health Medical Center. The driver of the silver Mercedes-Benz was transported by ground to Broward Health North in unknown condition.
A rain shower moved through shortly before the crash, which left the motorcycle destroyed and the front end of the Mercedes crumpled. The impact of the crash deployed the airbags in the car and ejected the motorman, who was on-duty at the time of the crash.
It remains unknown exactly what caused the accident, but a witness said the motorcycle was heading east and the car west when they collided head on.
Crews removed the smashed motorcycle from the scene at around 5 p.m. Meanwhile, motormen have shown up in droves to Broward Health Medical Center to see how the injured deputy is doing.
