POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A Broward Sheriff's Office deputy has died after he was involved in a horrible crash.

Forty-seven-year-old Deputy Christopher Schaub died Wednesday night, as hundreds of law enforcement deputies, family and friends gathered at the Broward Health Medical Center.

Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti remembered Schaub as a fighter. "His heart gave out six times, and he was brought back to life," said Lamberti. "He kept struggling and struggling until the point where he couldn't struggle anymore."

According to a witness, Schaub was traveling west on McNab Road near Andrews Avenue when he collided head-on with a car heading east.

Rescue crews airlifted Schaub to the hospital where he was rushed into surgery. The female driver of the silver Mercedes-Benz involved in the wreck was taken to an area hospital for minor injuries.

At 8 p.m., a group of BSO deputy motormen escorted their fallen colleague from the hospital emergency room to the medical examiners office.

Authorities had completely shut down the intersection where the crash occurred for hours, as traffic investigators examined the scene.

Schaub had been with BSO for 22 years.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
