Suspect escapes after jumping into canal

SUNRISE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A suspected thief eluded capture after he led police on a chase and jumped into a canal.

Police said the man tried to break into a Farm Stores along Northwest 12th Court and Sunset Strip, early Thursday morning. Authorities said the suspect took off after being approached by an officer and eventually jumped into a nearby canal.

Police set up a perimeter but they never located the suspect.
