Elderly woman burglarized and molested

MIAMI (WSVN) -- Police have released a sketch of man believed to have fondled an elderly woman after breaking into her home.

City of Miami Police canvassed the victim's neighborhood, along Coral Way and 12th Avenue, Monday afternoon, handing out flyers with the sketch.

Police said this man broke into the victim's home last Thursday. The victim, an elderly female in her sixties, was sleeping at approximately 5:10 in the morning when she was awoken by the subject who was wearing briefs and a white undershirt around his face. The subject then climbed on top of the victim and began to undress and choke her.

The victim was able to describe the subject to police investigators because he removed the undershirt off his face while proceeding to fondle her. After the sexual molestation, the subject then fled in an unknown direction.

The victim was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital where she received treatment.

Police are telling neighbors to be on alert. "I think it's great that they're passing on this information," said Mercedes Mayra-Najara, a concerned resident. "I wasn't aware of this information, and I work by Third Avenue, but that's good that they're watching after us."

Miami Police Sgt. Freddie Cruz said, "There's a lot of possibilities here. I personally believe that this individual was watching this female. He knew her habits, he knew she slept alone at home."

The Miami Police Department said it is looking for a black, Latin male who is bald, weighs 230 to 245 pounds and stands 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall.

In the meantime, Cruz offered some tips for those living with fear of another such attack. "The elderly people need to educate themselves, as well, make sure they lock their doors, turn on the light at home, and if you do live alone at home, notify them of your well-being. Have an emergency contact of some sort."

If you have any idea who this attacker might be, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
