Little girl wanders away from school

MIAMI (WSVN) -- A little girl's trip to school took quite a frightening turn for her father after he dropped her off for class.

Dayra Torres simply walked away from school after Oscar Torres left her at Hartner Elementary School, Tuesday morning. Thankfully, the teary-eyed 5-year-old was back in her dad's arms soon after wandering off from the school. "Thank God this time around nothing happened," Torres said, speaking through a translator.

The father said his daughter was at Hartner Elementary when she saw a woman who looked like an old neighbor and decided to follow that woman. "She left school following the woman that was there," Torres said.

Luckily, a Good Samaritan noticed the girl outside the school. "I found her," said a woman who did not identify herself. "She was in the corner."

But to get from where she was to where she was ultimately reunited with her dad, on Northwest 31st Street, just east of Miami Avenue, she had to walk along four-lane Northwest 29th Street and cross busy Miami Avenue.

Dayra's dad took her back to school, saying he has a message for administrators. "I'm going to ask them to be more careful with the kids in the school," he said.

School Board officials said they are investigating to see how the girl was able to get out without anyone stopping her. They said they plan to work on this to make sure it does not happen again.
