SANFORD, Fla. (AP) -- The police department that initially investigated the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin is getting re-accredited.

The Sanford Police Department announced Tuesday that the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation unanimously voted to re-accredit the agency.

The Sanford Police Department came under fire for its initial handling of Martin's fatal shooting by former neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman last February in a gated community.

Zimmerman wasn't arrested until 44 days after Martin was killed.

Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder but is pleading not guilty. He is claiming self-defense.
