FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A popular highway was brought to a complete standstill after a Hummer crashed into a motorcyclist during the Thursday afternoon commute.

The Hummer rolled over, and the motorcycle exploded into flames after the bike's driver was thrown off in the northbound lanes, just south of Interstate 595, near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

The rider of the motorcycle was rushed to Broward North Medical Center in critical condition. It appears that those in the sport utility vehicle are OK.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene and continue to investigate.

Though the white Hummer flipped, it was righted and placed on the side of the road. The burnt out wreck of the motorcycle was quickly extinguished but remained on the scene, as the investigation continued.

The crash happened just after 4 p.m., causing traffic to back up all the way past Hallandale Beach Boulevard. I-95 was left a parking lot for hours. Cars and even trucks made U-turns to exit against traffic on the northbound on-ramp.

The highway lanes reopened by 8 p.m.
