Former maid's daughter charged in extortion scheme
MIAMI (AP) -- Authorities say they've arrested a South Florida woman on extortion charges for threatening to release embarrassing documents about the family that founded Claire's stores.
The Miami Herald reports Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigators arrested 21-year-old Camille Brown Tuesday in Boynton Beach. She's the daughter of the former housekeeper for Rowland Schaefer, who founded the Pembroke Pines-based chain of stores that sell jewelry and accessories popular with teens.
Investigators say the family told them Brown sent an email claiming she had derogatory information and planned to release it unless they paid her $3 million.
Undercover FDLE agents acting as the family's representatives set up a meeting with Brown on Tuesday.
She was in the Palm Beach County Jail early Wednesday. An attorney for Brown wasn't listed on jail records.
