Fla. Keys boy, 6, drowns in canal

SUGARLOAF KEY, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say a 6-year-old boy was pulled from a canal in the Florida Keys shortly after his mother noticed him missing.

Monroe County Sheriff's officials say Jadiyean Butler was last seen sitting on his porch eating pistachios Monday. His 29-year-old mother Carletta Butler told deputies she was inside feeding her newborn baby and when she went to check on the boy, he was gone.

Butler told deputies that she and 42-year-old Adrian Poitier went looking for the boy and found him in the canal near the home on Green Turtle Lane on Sugarloaf Key.

They pulled the boy from the water, but he was unresponsive. Deputies arrived and took over CPR on the boy, who could not be revived.

Deputies are investigating.
