Serious accidents close Florida Keys highway
KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities in the Florida Keys say periodic road closures on the single highway linking the island chain with the mainland have stemmed from multiple serious accidents.
Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin says 21 accidents were reported between Friday and Sunday morning.
One accident obstructed part of U.S. 1 for about six hours Saturday. Herrin says one person died and two people were airlifted to hospitals after a motorcycle and a vehicle collided on Big Pine Key.
The road over the Seven Mile Bridge was closed for more than an hour Saturday evening after an accident involving two vehicles, including one towing a trailer.
Florida Highway Patrol is investigating an accident that left six people with minor injuries and closed the road early Sunday.
