Man dies after police-involved shooting

MIAMI (WSVN) -- The man shot by police during a confrontation at University Square Village, near Florida International University's Modesto A. Maidique Campus has died.
Miami-Dade Police, along with Sweetwater Police and FIU Police, responded to a call at the University Square Village at the 1900 block of Southwest 107th Avenue, near Florida International University, at around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Police said they originally tried to track down a suspect involved in an incident at Miami International Airport, which led them to the apartment complex in Southwest Miami-Dade. "When those detectives arrived," said Detective Roy Rutland, "They did in fact locate the suspect of this investigation. There was a confrontation when they located him and shots were fired. We had at least two detectives fire at the subject, striking him multiple times."
The incident is believed to have occurred in the parking lot of the apartment complex, in front of Apartment 809. A black pickup truck and another vehicle were involved. "We heard three gunshots so we went inside," said Ray Orellana. "About 10 minutes later we saw that the police started getting here."
The suspect is believed to have been shot multiple times by police. Police said the man was armed and had a bullet proof vest in his vehicle. "This was a very justified shooting," said the President of the Police Benevolent Association, John Rivera "This was a very justified shooting. Our police officers had every reason to fear for their own lives and for the lives of the people in this community."
The man was transported to Kendall Regional Medical Center with injuries and later died. Another woman believed to be a witness or family member was taken into police custody for questioning.
Police are investigating.
