MIAMI (WSVN) -- The mother of a 6-year-old boy is behind bars for leaving her child home alone overnight.

Thirty-three-year-old Rosa Carolina Recarte Gomez was arrested and charged with one count of child neglect after her son was found walking alone around Southwest 14th avenue on Thursday morning.

Officers responded to a phone call of a child wandering the streets around 3:30 a.m. The good Samaritan who found him said he was all alone in a dark street wearing only his pajamas.

The boy told officers he used a wooden duck to break a window and climb out of the house after waking up in the middle of the night and realizing his mom was not home. He told a police officer he was afraid.

The mother admitted to police that she did leave her son alone while he slept so she could go visit a friend and she did not realize how much time had gone by.

Miami Police officer Willie Moreno said, "It is something we do not agree with and we're still interviewing her."

Officers gave the child a jacket to stay warm and a happy meal to keep him in good spirits.

The child is safe and sound, and currently staying with a family friend.

Gomez was taken to Miami Police Headquarters to be interviewed by detectives to figure out exactly what happened.
