Naked intruder shot by homeowner

MIAMI (WSVN) -- Police have released a photo of a suspected trespasser who was shot by a South Florida homeowner Wednesday morning.

Police need help identifying the man, who the homeowner found naked and wrestling with his dog in the backyard of his Little Haiti home.

The homeowner stumbled across the scene at about 5 a.m. outside his home on Northwest First Avenue and 56th Street. Investigators said the homeowner and his family were home asleep when barking from their dog outside woke them up. Miami Police Detective Willie Moreno said, "A homeowner inside with his family sleeping, he's awoken by some noises he heard outside."

Police said the homeowner found the naked trespasser choking his pet Rottweiler. "[The homeowner] spotted a person that is not only fighting with his dog, but is naked fighting with his dog," said Moreno.

When the homeowner tried to intervene, the intruder attacked him. "He immediately jumped on the owner and started fighting with him," explained Moreno.

The homeowner told police he shot the man in the leg because he was biting him. "For right now, it does appear to be a justified shooting," Moreno said.

Police took the suspected intruder into custody and crews then took him to Jackson Memorial Hospital. The dog is safe and uninjured.

The suspect is still refusing to give up any identification to police. Police called officers with the department of corrections to the hospital to fingerprint him to try to find out his identity.

He has been charged with burglary, resisting arrest and animal cruelty.

The homeowner or his family did not want to talk about the incident.
